About The Department
Sitananda College was established on 21st July in 1960 under the affiliation of Calcutta University.
Anthropology General course at undergraduate level was introduced in 1960.
It was affiliated by Vidyasagar University in 1985.
Anthropology Honours was introduced in1991.
It is the second oldest college in North Eastern India just after Bangabasi College.
The eminent Anthropologist Dr. P .K .Bhowmik was the pioneer to open the Department.
Eminent professors namely Dipali Ghosh, Durdanta Chitta Bhowmik, Ramprasad Das, Dipankar Chowdhuri & Krishnendu Bhattacharya was attached from the beginning of the Department.
At present in the session 2024-2025 total students are 136.
At present total teachers are 7.

- To impart education in Rural & economically weaker students.
- To create interest to opt for Anthropology as a PG subject in higher education.
- To raise the standards of academically poor students and make them employable.
- To provide platform to the students to exhibit their talent & creativity.
