About The Department
Year of Establishment: B.A. (Gen.-1960, Hons-2008)
The department of Geography ,Sitananda college , Nandigram , is a modern scientific educational field. It was started its journey from 2005 as a 3-years general degree course and then 3-years honours course was included in 2009 and continue the journey to the present day. The course is developed with practical and theoretical bases. New multidimensional education system is enriched by the name of “Dipanwita Jana Memorial Laboratary and Library” since 2012. Teacher, student,guardian and administrative members are well cooperative to each other.
Vision
To establish a platform for the dissemination and creation the knowledge through teaching, Practical and research in Geography at various levels for society and environment and help to create a green society which encourages logical thinking.

Why Study Geography?
There are many reasons students might choose Geography as a subject of study at undergraduate level:
- Geography helps to understand how the world works, including the physical and human aspects.
- Geography can help to understand issues like climate change, sustainability, urban regeneration, human rights, natural disasters and international relations.
- Seek to achieve an academic degree with a varied employment prospects ranging from Cartographer, town planner, Geographical Information System Officer, Environmental consultant, School teacher and many more.
- It can help to develop the skills to think critically and creatively about the world.
Departmental Highlights
- As a part of internal evaluation, seminars on relevant topics from the course Curriculum are organized to provide students a chance to acquire the skill of interaction with others. Besides, class tests, quiz, project works and mock tests for exam preparation are arranged.
- Apart from regular classes the department focuses on remedial class before University exams to provide support to students who are struggling with any topic or paper.
- The classroom is equipped with provision of ICT enabled teaching facility.
- The department has ownComputer Laboratory equipped with Open Source GIS Software.
- The department runs an Add- On Course on "Basic Computer Application" for increasing the employability of students.
- Good stock of equipment including survey instruments, meteorological instruments, stereoscopic devise, aerial photographs, satellite imageries, SOI Topographical maps, rocks and minerals, soil testing kits and other drawing and instructional materials creates ideal experiential learning environment.
- To provide opportunity to the students for self-expression in written form, the department publishes yearly Wall Magazine 'BHUMATRIKA' on any topic of importance.
- The department encourages to unfold the cultural skills of the students by conducting different cultural programs on the occasion of Teachers' Day, Fresher's Welcome and Farewell Programme.
- Besides college central library, department has a departmental library for teacher and student.
- Department has own purified drinking water facility.
- In order to foster a better learning environment and to enhance the communication between guardians and teachers, yearly parent-teacher meeting is organized.
- The departmental students are encouraged to participate in Career Oriented courses, Add-On Courses, NSS units, games and sport activities.

Departmental Library
On 2012 a departmental library was established in memory of LateDipanwita Jana (ex. Student of the department) named “Dipanwita Jana Memorial Library”. There are about 170 books of various branches of Geography are available for students and teacher in the library.
